Ecotourism Viability Assessment

Ecotourism is big business in many parts of the country. In South Texas, for example, estimates are as high as $4 billion per year. Many landowners have found that their income can be supplemented by opening their gates to ecotourists.

Most ecotourism in the United States revolves around birds. There is a growing interest in butterflies and odonates (dragonflies and damselflies).

TX-ESA has the experience to assist both land owners and communities in evaluating and establishing ecotour programs. We cover all aspects: evaluating properties for ecotour assets, designing and establishing programs, and conducting tours.

For Property Owners

Not every property lends itself to a viable ecotour program. The following are the major aspects to consider:

Do you have species present on your property that are difficult to find in other locations?

This is the best characteristic that your property can have. Birders spend thousands of dollars to see birds that they have not seen before, or have not seen in a particular geographical area. Virtually every area of the country has species of local, regional, or national interest. In South Texas, for example, a landowner who has a population of Ferruginous Pygmy-owls on the property has a great opportunity for ecotourism just because of that one species. With the right species, the property can be in a very remote region and still attract a lot of business.

Do you regularly have a large variety of species, at least during certain seasons of the year?

Ecotourists aren't always seeking rarities. Many just enjoy going out for the day. To take advantage of this situation, the property must be reasonable close to a geographical area that has lots of ecotourists.

Is camping regularly available in your area?

If not, you may be able to set up a camping/RV site that could be profitable, even if you lack the species resources.

For Communities and Local Nature Groups

Do you have ecotour resources in your geographical area?

If there are multiple locations in your geographical with the natural resources described above, you may be able to establish a wildlife festival. Such festivals can provide an economic boost to your local area.
